Normally, two water level indicators are fitted at the front end of every boiler. When the boiler drum is positioned at a height, the gauge is often inclined for better visibility from different angles. As water converts into steam during operation, the level inside the boiler decreases. Maintaining a safe water level is critical—if it drops below the safe limit, serious damage such as cracks or leakage may occur, leading to shutdown of steam generation.

Working:
The system uses cocks to control the passage of steam and water. When opened, the water level in the glass tube matches the boiler water level, allowing easy monitoring. A drain cock is provided to periodically remove accumulated sediments and maintain accuracy.
The upper and lower stuffing boxes are connected by a hollow metal column. Under normal conditions, safety balls remain in position. In case the glass tube breaks due to pressure, these balls automatically move to shut off steam and water flow, ensuring operator safety. The cocks can then be closed safely, and the damaged glass tube replaced.
Additionally, screwed caps are provided for internal cleaning after dismantling. The design is robust and prevents splintering, ensuring that even if the glass breaks, it does not harm the operator.
