What is a Quick Release Coupling?
Quick Release Coupling is a fitting used to mate fluid lines with system equipment that requires frequent connecting and disconnecting. They are used in both
pneumatic and
hydraulic applications to build or discontinue the connection of a fluid pipeline.
It is well known as
quick coupler,
quick coupling or
quick connect coupling. Quick coupling can be made of stainless steel SS316, carbon steel and brass material for practically every application contingency. The fittings size is available from
1/4” to 2”. The working pressure will be determined depending on the body size.
Double End Shut Off Quick Release Coupling – High Pressure
This type of double end shut off coupling is typically used in applications with high pressure such as water, hydraulic and compressed air systems. Special annealed steel is used in the making of such couplings to provide higher reliability and strength. When disconnected, the inner valve closes both the plugs and the sockets. Their normal working pressure is typically 210 bars and the maximum working pressure is typically 215 bars.
Double End Shut Off Quick Release Coupling – Standard Pressure
The double end shut off coupling can shut off the plug and the socket simultaneously and instantaneously upon disconnection. They can be made of steel, stainless steel, or brass at different pressure ranges, sizes, and fluid applications. They are typically used in applications with standard pressure and a working pressure of up to 100 bars. The normal working pressure would typically be 20 bars, while the maximum working pressure is 100 bars.
Purpose of Couplings
Couplings are used in machinery or lines for different purposes. The primary function of a coupling is to transfer power from one end to the other. Other common uses of couplings are listed below:
- Couplings are used for the alteration of the vibration characteristics of the rotating units
- They connect the driven part with the driving part
- Couplings introduce protection between the rotating parts (i.e. overload protection)
- Couplings serve the purpose of reducing the transmission of shock loads between two shafts
- When overload occurs, couplings are there to slip
- Couplings are used for power transmission
- They absorb shock and vibration
- Misalignment accommodation
- They are used to interrupt heat flow
The Advantages
The use of quick release couplings can ease and speed up the job, and save a lot of money as well. Its use is as easy as connecting an electrical equipment for operation. As a result, they increase the output of the system and reduce its downtime. These devices reduce the demand of labour in installing and operating such systems. They also eliminate the use of screws and valves in a hydraulic or pneumatic system. Owing to this, the systems making use of such devices save a lot on initial installation and maintenance involved in repairing and replacing the valves and screws. With its use, spillage of costly and dangerous liquids and others fluids can also be prevented. This contributes to a cleaner environment, making way for a safe working environment. This can also minimize and prevent the loss of hydraulic and other fluids that are quite expensive.
